From ZINC contemporary:

ZINC contemporary is proud to present a solo exhibition of works by Seattle-based artist Sarah More entitled Before & After. In this exhibition, More presents a collection of works that explore the tension and transformative shift that occurs at the intersection of time and personal existence. Having experienced both loss and enormous change during the making of this body of work, More sees each piece as a meditation turned inside out.

Her abstract compositions are inspired by daily walks, during which she absorbs the present through the shapes and patterns she encounters—both natural and manmade.

“Walking allows me an opportunity to clear my head while taking in my surroundings. Stairways, crosswalks, windows, flowers, puddles and trash crash together in front of me. When I return to the studio, I redraw these disparate parts from memory and photographs, distilling them even further into their most basic, abstract forms,” states More.

More’s use of bold color combined with subtle hues further underscores the push and pull within the compositions, while the velvety texture of the surface draws one into the exquisite detail of line and shape.

“Color plays a significant role in my work, and while I am drawn to the colors that exist around me, I am obsessed with finding ways to infiltrate these existing palettes with punchy, unexpected hues. This balance, between natural and artificial, found and imagined, provides me with a framework to work within while pushing and pulling compositional elements to create dynamic combinations.”

ZINC contemporary debuted More’s works at the Seattle Art Fair in 2022 to much excitement and will present her work in April at Art Market San Francisco.

More about More:

Impacted by the works of Geometric Abstractionists and Bauhaus Designers—Sonia Delaunay (originally named Sarah as well), Anni Albers and Gunta Stölzl, More creates each piece by hand though they are often mistaken for digital designs. More credits her time as a studio assistant to Takashi Murakami for her love of precision and eye for detail. More taught art history at Penn State, and various other institutions while working in design manufacturing and factory production management. In 2022, the artist completed a large-scale mural for the Meta Open Arts program, which in part incited her recent relocation to Seattle.
