Alum releases educational coloring book
Lisa Kimberly Glickman 81 PT has released a coloring book titled Dabblers, Divers, Paddlers and Waders: Wonderful Waterbirds to Colour / Barboteurs, Plongeurs, Echassiers et Limicoles: Nos beau oiseaux aquatiques à colorier.
This bilingual, educational, fundraising coloring book comprises 30 of the author/artist’s favorite water-loving birds that either live year-round in or migrate through Quebec. The book features lively images of birds in their typical environment. Each bird’s image is accompanied by a page of interesting facts with mini-illustrations of insects, fruits, plants and critters—ready to be colored as well. To help readers better understand the terminology, the book includes an image of bird morphology that can also be colored in. Also included is a bird-watching list to help readers get started.
The coil-bound book lies flat to make the pages easier to color and allow artists to remove the completed pages. It is printed on 80-pound matte paper with a glossy, full-color cover. Most of the illustrations were based on photos taken by virtual friends, local and worldwide, met via social media; this is really a child of the pandemic and our global connectedness.
The price is $32.50, and a percentage of the proceeds from each sale will go to the McGill Bird Observatory, a registered Canadian nonprofit charity run entirely by volunteers. These unsung local birding heroes work on a tract of land adjacent to the Morgan Arboretum, researching and tracking migratory populations.
Books can be ordered from the author’s website, or by emailing glicksart@gmail.com for porch pickup in the West Island. They can be shipped anywhere in Canada for $5.50 per book.
The French translation was done by fellow bird photographer and retired CBC journalist Hubert Gendron—who Glickman met through Technoparc Oiseaux on Facebook. The foreword is by Mark Peck of the Shad Gallery for Biodiversity at the Royal Ontario Museum, an ornithologist she met through using his photographs as reference. Dabblers, Divers, Paddlers and Waders is the second book Glickman created during the pandemic. The first one—Whimsical Birds to Colour—has already raised $900 for Bird Protection Quebec.
Glickman spoke about her book on a recent episode of All in a Weekend with Sonali Karnick.
