I Completed my First Marathon…IN MY KITCHEN
I completed my 1st MARATHON (26.7mi), under QUARANTINE, in SOCKS, jogging circles in my KITCHEN!!!
Then a 2nd (28mi) and 3rd (33mi) the following week!
2 years ago, after my emergency heart surgery for recovery I walked 4-15 miles daily in my kitchen for months, later on in Boston as it was the only exercise allowed. In December, blood work signaled to get back to shape, so I pushed walks for the next 4 months (8-22 miles daily exploring city which I loved).
I quarantined March 15, 2020 and started to jog in the same kitchen circle to get the steps desired. Running was tough as it was like running around a limo in a tight garage with walls, but jogging allowed me to hold phone to chatter, watch COVID-19 news, do some work, and also helped get PPE supplies from overseas to places. When I neared 22 miles one day I thought another hour and I’d be at Marathon distance, so I Said Go, and boom, 1st Marathon I’ve ever done.
I myself never thought I’d ever complete a marathon in my life but now I’ve finished 3, in quarantine, in socks, jogged in circles in my kitchen! Not the best times but considering the restraints, I’m happy!
- Mar 19: 26.7 miles (Rested a week after)
- Mar 29: 28 miles (felt great)
- Mar 31: 21 miles (had many like this)
- Apr 3: 33 miles (non stop jogging)
Other days I’d average 6-18 miles mix of walk/jogs and likely will do that for now on.
I’ve been chatting with friends about organizing another home marathon, with others on Zoom, while raising funds for COVID-19 front line heroes (inspired by a guy who ran marathon in his backyard and raised funds I read about after my 2nd).
It might happen, but will see if things can happen. It would be cool to have the world’s largest global marathon together on Zoom mid-April when the Boston Marathon usually takes place—full of potatoes like myself who never thought of running a marathon.
Thinking up names like Zoomathon, Rise of the Potatoes, Life Run, StayHomathon, Quarentinathon, etc. If interested, let me know how you can help out.
