Changes coming to RISD Weekend, Commencement and Alumni Reunions.

Dear fellow alumni, 

I’m pleased to share how some of our most cherished milestone events will take place next academic year. This week, President Somerson announced plans to bring students back to campus in the fall and followed up to share news about Commencement, RISD Weekend and other events. 

Here are the key things for alumni to know:

  • RISD Weekend is being planned in a virtual format in early October. Details will be forthcoming.

     
  • Unfortunately, due to public health guidelines on public gatherings, RISD Craft will not be an in-person event. RISD is exploring the possibility of holding it virtually with new opportunities to reach broader audiences than those who usually attend on campus.
     
  • Commencement for the Classes of 2020 and 2021 will take place on June 5, 2021 as a joint ceremony as a joint ceremony in Providence as public health guidelines allow.
     
  • RISD is planning for in-person Grad and Senior Shows during the fall in addition to the online exhibits: RISD Grad Show 2020 and RISD Senior Show 2020.

     
  • Reunions, which have traditionally been part of RISD Weekend in October, will move to early June to coincide with Commencement. I am excited by this change because we can introduce new traditions to connect students and alumni, offer new programs and use the occasion to welcome our new graduates into the Alumni Association. We look forward to welcoming back the Class of 2020 for their first reunion and to welcoming back alumni with class years ending in 0, 1, 5 and 6 to celebrate their reunions.

     
  • We will be sending you a reunion preferences survey later this summer. As always, your feedback and guidance will be important in helping us shape Reunion programming and events in ways that you would enjoy.


While some of these changes have been made in response to COVID-19, I hope you will agree that the opportunity to connect sooner with our recent graduates will only strengthen our alumni community.
