"DESIGN DYSPHORIA"
DESIGN DYSPHORIA is a queer designer-led exhibition that debuts at 2024 NYC Design Week. We are emphasizing the cruciality of queer creative spaces to highlight how they inform LGBTQIA+ art and design. The queer community is intimately intertwined with the environments we construct and inhabit. There is an opportunity to establish new places that prioritize queer voices and camaraderie, while also challenging the binary of traditional spaces.
What is the significance of being a LGBTQIA+ designer in a world that is just beginning to integrate queerness into its common milieu? As Aaron Betsky describes in his book, Queer Space,“ We make and are made by our own spaces.” “Queer Space” is a familiar term to many who identify as LGBTQIA+. A Queer Space is a place of safety, joy, and a welcoming space to celebrate each other. We are inviting queer creatives to feature designs that further this discussion and challenge the binary of our day to day through their objects.
This show features a curated group of emerging to established queer designers and artists with an emphasis on the works of trans, non-binary and female identified makers. Through this exhibition we are championing the importance of queer voices, especially in the realms of furnishing and objects. We are excited to have this exhibition inspire more conversations about and platforms featuring queer design. Some of the featured designers and artists include:
Vivian Chu, Liz Collins, Pamela Council, Deborah Czeresko, Mark Grattan, Liz Hopkins, Studio Ii S, Nima Jeizan, Kira Keck, Fawn Krieger, Larry Krone, Jeremy Martin, Zander Schlacter, Zev Schwartz, Zhi Wei, Grace Whiteside and Fo Wilson.
Along with an opening party on May 17th 7-10pm, we will also have a thoughtful panel discussion with the curators on May 19th 3pm- 5pm. This discussion will follow the format of “Queer Brunch” as well collaborate with local LGBTQIA+ bartenders to serve elevated brunch cocktails. The show will be on view until May 25th.
