Alumni firm wins Residential Design Architecture Award
The Newport architecture firm Estes Twombly + Titrington Architects, headed by architects including James Estes BArch 72 and Peter Twombly BArch 80, has won the Residential Design Architecture Award for a Westerly, Rhode Island residence.
NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND – Newport architecture firm Estes Twombly + Titrington recently received a Citation Award from the 2023 Residential Design Architecture Awards by Residential Design Magazine for their Quahaug Point project. The award program received nearly 400 entries, with Quahaug Point receiving one of just 25 awards.
Located in Westerly, Rhode Island, Quahaug Point is a blend of classic New England gabled building forms and large contemporary glazed areas, with open views to the pond and ocean beyond. During warmer seasons, life shifts fluidly between inside and out. The clients chose the site on Quonochontaugh Pond to build a retreat for family gatherings. The lot rambles down to the pond and offers views of the open ocean beyond. Bluestone pavers carry through the house at the entry out to the screen porch, knitting the house to the site. The great room has unencumbered views of the pond out of the fully glazed south wall and opens to outdoor living and dining spaces on the western patio.
The house and landscaping reflect the homeowner’s values of environmental stewardship and Estes Twombly + Titrington Architects’ focus on sustainable design and construction. A high efficiency geothermal heat pump cools and warms the house. Solar photovoltaics and a green roof further offset the energy demands and help to manage rainwater.
