Alum named Executive Director of DesignxRI
DESIGNxRI (DxRI), the only nonprofit economic development organization in Rhode Island dedicated exclusively to the design sector, today announced the appointment of Islay Taylor as its next Executive Director.
This leadership transition marks a significant milestone as DxRI prepares to launch a strategic planning process that will uplift Rhode Island’s design sector by championing creativity, expanding access to opportunity, and using design to drive inclusive innovation.
“Islay brings a rare mix of creative insight, operational expertise, and deep community ties,” said Scott Lyons, the Board Vice President and Chair of the Search Committee. “At a moment when DxRI is evolving into a more precise, intentional version of itself, she is exactly the kind of leader who can carry forward our values while challenging us to reach further.”
Islay Taylor (she/her) is a seasoned arts administrator, educator, and curator with more than a decade of experience leading inclusive, community-centered creative programs in Rhode Island. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA) and Alfred University (BFA), she most recently served as Associate Director at The Steel Yard, where she led workforce training initiatives, artist residencies, and capacity-building efforts to expand access to the industrial arts.
Her approach blends strategic thinking with a deep respect for the creative process, making her uniquely suited to guide DESIGNxRI’s next chapter of service, experimentation, and sector-wide collaboration.
“I’ve long admired the work of DESIGNxRI and am honored to join this people-centered team of talented, motivated changemakers,” said Taylor. “DxRI has elevated design across Rhode Island, creating a platform for both emerging and established talent to thrive. I’m excited to build on that momentum and help shape the future of design in our state.”
Taylor will succeed Rue Sakayama, who guided the organization through a dynamic period of growth, program expansion, and operational refinement. Sakayama will continue to be involved with the organization, focusing on storytelling, documentation, and ensuring operational continuity during the transition.
“Islay brings a deep commitment to creative communities and a vision for DxRI that is both inclusive and forward-thinking,” said Rue Sakayama, outgoing Executive Director. “I’m thrilled to welcome her into the role and look forward to supporting her as she leads the next evolution of DxRI’s mission.”
