2024 Art & Design Educator Award: Moon Jung Jang MFA 08 GD
In recognition of the unique graphic design centered creative culture she has developed in her 15 years teaching at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, the RISD Alumni Association awards Moon Jung Jang MFA 08 GD the 2024 Art & Design Educator Award.
Moon Jung Jang is a graphic designer, visual artist, and educator who has developed a unique creative culture centered on graphic design in her 15 years of teaching at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. She has established core graphic design courses, including Color Design in Building Abstract Narratives, Graphic Systems, and Visual Narrative Systems and founded an experimental design lab, C-U-B-E, which functions as a dedicated study and multipurpose gallery space. In addition, Jang received a UGA Creative Teaching Award in 2020 for her use of innovative pedagogy and has prioritized offering creative development opportunities for her students. These opportunities include participating in the UGA Special Collections Libraries’ Faculty Teaching Fellows program, where she used archival materials to help students explore graphic design problems and the impact of visual communication design, guiding undergraduates through events hosted by the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and others.
At the same time, Jang has presented her award-winning work in solo exhibitions and international shows, curated exhibitions, advanced the study of visual narratives, and collaborated on interdisciplinary math topology and design research.
