"I’d Like To Buy A Vowel (WHEEL OF FORTUNE)" (2024)
Eric White 90 IL
oil on canvas
72 x 72 inches
White’s paintings explore the intersection of the romanticized American dream and the psychological paranoia imbued in this fantasy. Referencing 20th century culture with a
painterly finesse, his work subverts and recodes the dominant narratives of contemporary society.
White’s exhibition Local Programming opened at GRIMM Gallery in New York City in February 2024, and included a series of vignettes centering around an anonymous female character seeking solace and spiritual enlightenment in television, convinced she is receiving divine transmissions from its programs, specifically game shows. Set in the muted haze of the 1970s, the woman’s actions blur the boundary between psychological delusion and metaphysical epiphany.
