This is a piece from my most recent book, Before She was My Grandmother, about my grandmother, Alice. Both my paternal grandparents were artists who influenced and inspired my life and work. After 30 years of illustrating more than 30 children's books, I finally made one about Alice and I hope to do one about my grandfather,Fuller, some day too. The other books I wrote and illustrated were either about my childhood and traveling with my parents' puppet theater or sharing the importance of creativity and imagination with my own children. I illustrated books by other authors such as Gertrude Stein, Toni Morrison, Mary Pope Osborne and Matthea Harvey.
