Painted paper and cardboard on multiplane film stage
Misophonia is a short film created with live action puppetry performed on a multiplane animation stage. After picture book illustrating for 15 years I migrated back to my family's profession of puppetry and worked in theater as a puppeteer and fabricator. In 2019 I started exploring shadow puppetry, inspired by Wayang and the animated films of Lotte Reiniger. I created this technique of live-performing paper puppets on a multiplane, and discovered that it blended my two backgrounds of book illustration and puppet theater very well. 23 years after graduating I found the perfect medium for me to tell my own stories. Misophonia was screened at 30 film festivals in 2023 including the Providence Children's Film Festival. It can be seen on Amazon Prime in the Handmade Puppet Dreams collection Fantastic Worlds.
