"The Story of Someone" (2022)

This is the cover illustration to a book titled, “The Story of Someone”. I set out to use a 3" x 5" format making 150+ illustrations, looking to discover how much could be done in one constrained set of dimensions. Of the 150+ illustrations, 44 made it into the book. Each was made using a fine Japanese brush and Japanese made black ink. I had lived in Japan for 5 years and took cues from Sumi-e (Soomee-ey) utensils and techniques.

Normally, I sketch, draw, paint in a somewhat disciplined, representational manner, but through these illustrations and process, I learned to let go, finding that a somewhat whimsical, light hearted illustrator had been knocking.
