I am primarily a landscape painter because I find inspiration and challenge in showing my view of the natural world; all of my artworks center around the places I've been.
"Storm Over Tunyo Pin", also called Black Mesa, is a sacred site on the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, playing a crucial role in their history, including during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 where warriors resisted the Spanish for months. I chose to paint this because I climbed the mesa with my ladies hiking group back in 1972 when I lived in Los Alamos.
Landscape painting has long had an important role in awakening people to the beauty and fragility of the natural environment, and I feel that its power is just as important today as it was centuries ago.
Since I am a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, I include the letters NWS after my signature on watermedia paintings, as in "Sandra Humphries NWS".
