Organ Lady
Oil on Canvas
48 x 60 inches
Organ Lady is an oil painting that depicts a woman standing behind an organ cleaning up after a flood disaster. It speaks to our resilience and ability to move on from seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Her paisley top has an image of a lotus flower along the neckline symbolizing rebirth. My mother showed this strength and disconnect from the flood disaster we experienced when I was a child. Over the years I noticed women specifically having the ability to move forward after disasters, to begin to clean, to create order, and to survive for their families. After WWI and WWII there was a group of women called trümmer frauen, or rubble women, who would remove an entire city block of bombed out rubble brick by brick.

Breach (2021)
Oil on Canvas
6 x 16 feet
Breach is part of a series based on a flood I was in when I was young. Images from this disaster became the framework of my subconscious and have taken on metaphorical significance in my life. Breach is a group of people working together to stop an overwhelming force. At first it was the flood waters, now it can be a metaphor for an election, pandemic, global warming, corporations, psychological depression, etc. Breach was painted during Covid in New York City. I call it my Covid beast.
