"May The Circle Stay Unbroken"
May The Circle Stay Unbroken opens Friday, June 28 at Chastain Gallery, 135 Chastain Park Ave. NW, and runs through Saturday, August 24.
Steve Steinman’s Retrospective 50 years of artistic work, which includes sculpture, photography, and drawing will be on display in June at the retrospective exhibition, May The Circle Stay Unbroken, hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs at Chastain Gallery.
Considered one of the city’s most prolific, long-standing fine artists, Steinman is well-known for his colorful sculpture installation at the Buckhead Marta station created in preparation for the 1996 Olympics. He is also known for his Give Our Police a Hand monument in Woodruff Park honoring Atlanta police officers. His signature metal sculptures are predominantly designed in the round.
Says Kevin Sipp, Exhibition Manager, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs for City of Atlanta, the importance of Steinman’s work to the City of Atlanta cannot be underestimated. “For the past four decades, Steve Steinman has been one of Metro Atlanta’s steady visionaries, a master artist, and elder statesman of the Atlanta art scene. Steve has proven to be a true polymath when it comes to creativity and vision. Not content to settle in one form or another, he continues to push the boundaries of every medium he touches from painting, photography, and sculpture to hybrid forms that source varied media”, Sipp explained.
“His love for the earth we inhabit shines through across all his works,” he added, noting Steinman’s concern for the environment using recycled materials for artistic repurpose. “Each of his bodies of work could have their own retrospective and I don’t envy the curator tasked with distilling an overview of Steinman’s prolific output. From major commissions like the Buckhead Marta Station to intimate tabletop sculptural forms, Steve Steinman brings the pursuit of fine art form to joyful, thoughtful, and exuberant completion.”
