PAUL SOTO is proud to announce Pythagorean Paintings, a solo exhibition of new paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist Andy Giannakakis. The exhibition will open at our New York location on Monday, May 5th with a reception for the artist from 6 to 8pm, and it will run through Friday, June 20th. This is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. An accompanying exhibition catalogue, published by F, will be available during the run of the exhibition.

Pythagorean Paintings features ten new works by Giannakakis, including some of his largest to date. Each painting begins with a compositional constraint based on the Pythagorean theorem, using the Pythagorean tree—a fractal structure that visually embodies the theorem—as its starting point. Over several years, Giannakakis develops each work by intuitively adding and subtracting elements, allowing it to undergo continuous transformation. The paintings often generate a pareidolia effect, with illusory images emerging and dissolving within the abstract field. They bear the marks of prolonged physical engagement, with material presence speaking to these phantasmatic aspects. While the original fractal structure is frequently obscured, its traces remain beneath layers of matte earth tones punctuated by bursts of synthetic phrasing. The resulting visual fields seem to ignite from within—immersive, indeterminate spaces where vibrant, breathing lattices take shape.
