"Out of Nowhere"
Out of Nowhere by Deborah T. Colter 81 PR will be on view from June 21–July 22, 2023 at Atelier Newport.
NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND — Atelier Newport is pleased to present Out of Nowhere, a solo exhibition by locally and internationally recognized mixed media artist Deborah T. Colter. Deborah’s multi-layered paintings immediately transform space with their presence. She finds her discoveries in her consistent layering, construction and deconstruction. Colter’s storytelling abilities allow viewers to see worlds outside of a tangible realm.
In her own words, she tells us, “This collection speaks to my infatuation with process and exploration. The work often arrives out of nowhere as if sent from a place beyond my knowledge. I have a deep trust in the messy process of creating, with all its inherent bumps and wrinkles, which helps me understand my need to continue on this creative path. When the work begins to find its conclusion and I feel a little shiver run down my spine, it is then that I understand the painting has taken on a life of its own. Arrived, as if out of nowhere.”
Deborah T. Colter, born in Ithaca, New York, holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She currently lives and works on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.
