Nancy Pardee Abercrombie“Man oh man what a lifetime she had!” It all started on July 22, 1926 when Nancy DeWolf Pardee was born in Hazleton, PA, to Alice DeWolf Pardee and Frank Pardee Jr. From childhood on, Nancy was an exuberant person, entering experiences with curiosity and a can-do way of dealing with adversity. Whether it was raising her three sons (Guy, Chris, and Jack) or taking on diverse jobs and challenges including running an Art & Photography Workshop Studio, teaching elementary school children, being Supervisor for NBC Election News in NH for 10 years, operating a camera for the local cable station, or skiing black diamond runs, “Her spunk and stamina are legendary.”
For her family and friends Nancy was a source of inspiration, always offering new perspectives on life, never one to stay in the background, and “was such a strong personality and a pivotal figure” in their lives.
Nancy was an avid sportswoman throughout her life. “Her energy, drive and passionate advocacy were amazing.” She enjoying whatever activities were available—riding horses, skating, sailing, tennis, white water canoeing, and her favorite, skiing. She skied at an expert level until she was 80, played tennis until 90, and kayaked in southeast Alaska at 92.
As a young artist, Nancy majored in painting at RISD, but her lifelong letter writing to friends evolved into her true calling as a poet. She published two chapbooks of poems, a novel, her poems were included in a number of publications in New England and Seattle, and she presented her poems at many public readings.
