My spiritual practice has always been my time spent in untamed nature. Away from the din of our modern society, I can find solace and listen to what the universe has to say. The natural elements: earth, air, fire, water and aether and their intermingling energies are my muse, my subjects and the source material for my creative act. On my jaunts along the shore, through the woods, out at sea and so on, wonderful scenes unfold, dazzling moments occur that catch my eye, tickle my soul and inspire me to attempt to capture, adore and worship them. 

~Inspiration 

Something unusual began for me by observing the world through a natural reflective surface, like a mill pond or calm sea surface. Through that lens I discovered another dimension. The sun, sky and the host of natural elements evoked a different mood, bouncing off the mercurial surface of water. When captured together, a resonance occurs. A curious vibration charges the frame, a subtle tension or a whisper is now present. 

~Re-Coding 

Another curious discovery transformed my perspective; rotate the horizon line 90 degrees, and the earth, sky and sea seem to defy gravity. This abstract orientation challenges our innate sense of up and down, creating a slight liberation from the rules of terra ferma, allowing a sense of free fall or a floating. In this altered state of mind, the imagination is given a sudden liberty to reinterpret reality. Patterns are perceived that were not visible when observing the same scene without the power of reflection and being anchored to the flat plane of our normal existence. 

~Visual Amplification 

The woodworking and masonry technique of ‘book matching’ is the cleaving and opening of a material revealing the inherent grain pattern within. The veneers are presented by unfolding them, like opening a book so that the spine acts like an axis for a mirror. In effect, the original visual pattern is multiplied, in the basic case by 2; twice the impact of the “mother” visual. When a second axis of reflection is added at 90 degrees to the original, creating a geometric cross, the effect is multiplied by a factor of four. By hinging and multiplying the elements I captured in this way, a sacred Geometry is formatted. A glimpse of the infinite is offered, a portal opens to the eye of the divine, and God’s Eye, looks back into yours; linking your soul to the infinite. 

Traditionally, the “Gods’ Eye” pattern refers to a weaving design also known as “Ojo de Dios”. Originating with the Huichol indigenous people of Mexico. The name signifies the symbolic representation of a watchful, protective eye of God, where the center represents the power of seeing and understanding unseen things. In addition, the crossed sticks represent the four cardinal directions and elements: earth, water, fire and air. This geometric pattern represents a divine watchful eye, offering protection and spiritual insight. Other Sacred geometric patterns like the “Seed of Life” and the “Flower of Life” are circular designs of intersecting circles creating flower like patterns with a central focal point that draw the eye in to the center—Windows into the soul. 

To the ancient Egyptians, these divinities were conscious forms of nature. To me these elemental reflections reveal and awaken and celebrate the natural spirits. Feeling the presence of the various divinities, Ancient Greek mythology and its colorful and lyrical encapsulation of the universe seemed the perfect template for this gathering of spirits. 

Sacred geometry ascribes symbolic and sacred meanings to certain geometric shapes and proportions. It is associated with the belief of a divine creator, the universal geometer. The geometry used in the design and construction of classical religious structures such as cathedrals, temples, mosques, religious monuments and altars are based on the divine proportions. These geometric structures have a sound frequency, for instance, that is harmonic and fosters a sense of calm and awe. 

Historically, this geometric configuration technique has many examples, most are spiritual in nature. The Mandala, is a geometric configuration of symbols. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing the attention of practitioners and adepts as a spiritual guidance tool. Establishing a sacred space, activating the third eye, and becoming a springboard into meditation or a trance-like awareness of the infinite. Circular radiating rhythmic patterns draw the eye in to the design and in to your inner self. affirming suspected divine origins. I didn’t start taking pictures of nature to search for God or higher meaning. Rather my curiosity and this quasi Scientific approach to Art uncovered divine patterns. The patterns point to a divine center; Gods Eye. These reflections upon infinity and creation illuminate the interconnection of all things through a visual vibrational harmony.
