Alum named president of the Union of Maine Visual Artists

David Estey 64 PT and his wife Karen are living happily in their home studio overlooking the harbor in Belfast, Maine.

David began last year with a highly-successful, solo exhibit at the expansive Cove Street Arts gallery in Portland, Maine. He hasn't painted much since because he has been all-consumed with remaking the 50-year-old nonprofit Union of Maine Visual Artists to advocate for art and artists in support of the common good. David is now president of UMVA.

David is still life drawing twice a week and will get back to painting in earnest next year. His other passion is political essays on our sad state of affairs.

This year’s significant event is inclusion in “Art of Penobscot Bay” a new book by Carl and David Little, featuring 175 years of Maine paintings. His work is featured alongside such notables as Charles Dana Gibson, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, John Marin, Elliot Porter and all three Wyeths. David has produced over 100 sketchbooks, 1,200 paintings, and 9,800 drawings and prints.

RISD has made all the difference.
