Housebound Art
It is great to be part of this contemporary art online exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, responding to the rooms in an average house which includes live weekly artist interviews.
@houseboundart is curated by Susan Francis, Chapel Arts Studios Programme Curator, Andover, England. This week’s exhibition, The Kitchen, is now live on instagram. My painting The Kitchen Sink, is an oil painting on wood panel, 80x100 cms and was selected for this exhibition. It is what it is, a painting of my kitchen sink, dirty dishes and all.
I have been working as an artist since graduating from the painting department at RISD in 2001. I have always had to supplement my income with teaching and an additional job, or two. And when I decided to have children this combination of painting and multiple part time jobs, became very challenging to manage. However I have managed fitting my painting and other jobs around family life for 13 years and this lifestyle has definitely shaped the focus of my artist’s practice towards the subject of everyday life and the home. I am painting a lot during lockdown, and have been looking to nature and Pierre Bonnard’s paintings for inspiration. I have begun making paintings based mostly on memory, sketches and notes on colour and the results are exciting. Initiatives like this online exhibition are really engaging and stimulating for an artists practice and I hope to see more.
