The Artsy Vanguard 2019

On September 16 2019, Artsy released The Artsy Vanguard 2019. This compilation of 50 artists (from a pool of 600 nominees) are pursuing painting, sculpture, photography, filmmaking and performance, as well as investigative research and virtual reality. These artists immerse themselves into topics from human rights violations to youth culture, capturing the attention of collectors and celebrities around the world.

This year, two RISD alumni were recognized for their work in three categories.

Korakrit Arunanondchai 09 PR
Category: The New Leaders of Contemporary Art

Arunanondchai's work includes sculpture, painting and video—all addressing the modern notions of transit and identity. His work is currently on view at the Whitney Biennial and is featured in the Venice Biennale, making Arunanondchai one of the few artists included in both shows at the same time. Jane Panetta, one of the Whitney Biennial’s curators, stated “...we were excited by the ways in which his video fuses the personal with the global—including fantastical, narrative elements that he deftly interweaves with questions around family, loss, the environment, and even the navigation of multiple cultures.”

Martine Guttierez 12 PR
Category: The Breakout Artists

Guttierez's series of self-portraits "challenge gender stereotypes, offer up new visions of pop-cultural icons, and commingle tropes of high fashion and indigenous cultures." She has shown in Venice, in museum shows across the U.S., the U.K. and Germany, and has been featured on the cover of Artforum. RISD Museum curator Dominic Molon included Gutierrez in the show “Bona Drag” earlier this spring and Guttierez was also the subject of the cover story for RISD's spring/summer 2019 edition of XYZ.
