In a response to the issue of sustainability, instructor and alum Lothar Windels BID 96 created the "SuperLeicht" chair from Steinway's rejected spruce.
When Windels and a group of RISD students visited Steinway & Sons' New York City headquarters a decade ago, he learned that 50% of Sitka spruce in the Steinway lumberyard will never be used. This inspired him to reimagine designer Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair, a chair that weighs less than four pounds, all while reducing this substantial waste stream.
