Book jacket design for Mr. Wuffles by David Wiesner (2013)

Four-color process printed jacket, art created in watercolor and India Ink by David Wiesner
31.5 x 9.25 inches

Designing picture books for children requires a very close partnership with the author/illustrator, often involving many preliminary sketches and concepts. For this powerful jacket image of a bored yet ultimately curious cat, I chose display typography to mimic the colorful refrigerator magnets that Mr. Wuffles might have seen in his house. The colors of the letters reflect the rejected toys scattered around the cat and provide a counterpoint to the "alien" elements hinted at on the jacket and soon to be revealed within.
