WHAT IS
XYZ?
RISD XYZ
is a magazine by and about alumni of Rhode Island School of Design. It’s designed to keep readers informed about the people, projects and passions that make RISD’s creative community so special. The magazine does this by openly encouraging participation from alumni, capturing their creative energy and covering a broad range of issues of interest to artists, designers, educators and others in creative fields.
As RISD’s primary print publication,
RISD XYZ
was first published in May 2010, replacing the college’s original magazine
risd views
(1995–2009). It is sent to all RISD alumni living in the US at no cost. International alumni are encouraged to view the online version posted here, download a pdf below or opt-in to receive the printed piece through the mail. During the 2011–12 academic year, the magazine was published in November and May.
WHY THE NAME?
Well, we like the way it looks and sounds, for starters.
RISD XYZ
suggests that alumni need to fill-in-the-blank to help make the magazine whatever it wants to be. XYZ are beautiful letterforms that naturally seem to belong together (like RISD alumni). They’re also a bit exotic and enigmatic (again, a lot like RISD alumni) and are the most emblematic letters of the alphabet, with x and y used to represent intersecting coordinates in algebra, along with the chromosomes in people (who are, of course, at the core of this magazine). X, Y and Z come after R-I-S-D, which seems apropos to a magazine focused on what happens after alumni move on from RISD. XYZ also feels a bit like FPO – a work in progress – but is more poetic, which basically sums up how we hope the magazine comes across.
